River Report

We try to keep this page current but please look at the date of the report and remember that the Camel is a typical spate river and conditions can change in a few hours best used in conjunction with the local forecast  also the report refers to the middle reaches of the river and conditions may vary above and below Dunmere

Saturday 7th November 2009 1055hrs

Another 14mm of rain has raised the river a scripeth to produce some very nice spinning water with a tinge of colour and few leaves. If we believe the NWL this will all change this afternoon with gales and heavy rain.
Perhaps this will flush the leaves especially as there is a frost forecast.

Friday 6th November 2009 1141hrs

6mm of rain has maintained the river at an excellent fishing height, most of the colour has gone and the leaves are not too bad this morning. There were at least 6 fish caught yesterday and there should be some more today.

Thursday 5th November 2009 0942hrs

6mm of showery rain has kept the Camel just above an average winter flow a lot of the colour has dropped out leaving a slight amber tinge to the water the leaves while annoying are not too heavy this morning although this could change at any time. There were a few fish caught yesterday and we can expect there to be several more today.

Wednesday 4th November 2009 0922hrs

Another 12mm of rain has raised the Camel a scripeth and has provided ideal spinning water, the colour is an excellent brown not too thick or too thin. The only downside are the leaves which although nowhere near as bad as yesterday are still going to be annoying. I have heard of one fish (returned) this morning so far and I would expect to hear of several more.

Tuesday 3rd November 2009 0955hrs

15mm of rain so far today has raised the Camel to an above average winter height, ideal for spinning and with plenty of colour in the water BUT the leaves in the river at the moment are making it impossible to fish although it should be possible to catch a fish if you can get the cast to fish out properly this will be unlikely at the moment.
There were several fish caught yesterday by the anglers who braved the leaf situation and maybe the very high reaches could be fishable later today if the rain eases and the wind dies down.

Monday 2nd November 2009 1031hrs

Another 13mm of rain has helped a little, the colour is excellent (weak tea no milk) if a little thin and the height is almost ideal but there are still a lot of leaves although if you have the patience to un-leaf your bait 8 casts out of 10 I'm sure there will be fish moving upstream.

Sunday 1st November 2009

16mm of rain overnight has raised the river to a fishable level and there is a light grey colour in the water but the gales have blown untold numbers of leaves into the river rendering it almost impossible to fish this morning. More rain is required for a "proper job" and the NWL is promising a lot more to come this week.

Saturday 31st October 2009 1124hrs

The rain amounted to 6mm and has had no effect on the river which remains low, clear and full of leaves but NWL is still giving a lot of rain to come next week, she is also forecasting a few gales which will exacerbate the leaf problem in the short run.

Friday 30th October 2009 1525hrs

low, clear with a lot of leaves and mostly red fish but it's just started to rain, IF NWL is correct about the amount of rain for the weekend fishing should be excellent next week (except for the leaves of course!)

Thursday 29th October 2009 1003hrs

Oh dear oh dear woe is upon the Bodmin Anglers, the river remains low and clear with a lot of leaves this morning and most of the fish already in the river are coloured and should not be fished for.
The better news from the NWL is that starting Friday night she is going to send some much needed rain and a lot more for next week.

Wednesday 28th October 2009 0935hrs

Low and clear with a few leaves, not a very promising day for fishing. The NWL is now forecasting plenty of rain for the weekend let's hope she sends a lot more than her last effort!

With the low water conditions prevailing there are a lot of "red" or "unclean" fish in the river if you have any doubt as to the condition of the fish please return it even if you feel it does not have any chance of survival! The club will take action against any member caught with a "red" fish please don't embarrass the club by retaining an unsuitable fish!

Please also remember that circle hooks are mandatory for bait fishing at the moment!

Rules about bait fishing or suitable fish apply to all club members on all beats of the river Camel whether on BAA waters, W&DAA or privately owned stretches the rules apply to you and not to the beat fished!

Tuesday 27th October 2009 0950hrs

We are back to square one with the river low and clear (perhaps a hint of second hand whiskey stain in the deeper pools) and with a lot of leaves to make fishing less enjoyable.
It's possible that a persistant angler may find a fresh fish but they are very few and far between!
The NWL is now giving rain for Friday but is being coy as to the amount that will fall in Cornwall

Monday 26th October 2009 1202hrs

There has not been "enough" rain, the river has dropped back and is now lowish and the colour of very well watered whiskey on the plus side the leaves are not as bad as they could be, I've heard of only two fish caught over the weekend which is a pity as I would have expected more given the conditions and the NWL is not forecasting much rain for this week!
